Three organizations have come together to make this year’s Sustainable Development Challenge all that it can be!

Global Citizen Events, GECCO, and Impact Toolbox work together because we believe young leaders are critical to addressing the UN’s 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

In the spirit of Goal # 17: Partnerships for the Goals, we know that together we can do more than alone.

Global Citizen Events

Founded by local community leaders in 2003, Global Citizen Events is an annual initiative that promotes the UN Sustainable Development Goals and celebrates the impact Okanagan citizens have in global and local humanitarian efforts.

GCE’s mission is to: Entertain, Educate and Inspire to Action.

The Sustainable Development Challenge is one of several events that we hold each February. Each year we are partnering with more community organizations to help us reach our city’s youth and provide them with this platform.

Global Empowerment Coalition of the Central Okanagan (GECCO)

The Global Empowerment Coalition of the Central Okanagan (known as GECCO) connects, educates, and motivates transformative change in the Okanagan community to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

GECCO is a Chapter of the BC Council for International Cooperation (BCCIC) and we work together on a regular basis to participate in BCCIC initiatives, programming and services.

We invite you to connect with us on social media via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

Impact Toolbox

Impact Toolbox empowers emerging leaders to transform their ideas and passion for social change and environmental protection into successful enterprises and community development projects through comprehensive training, support, and tools.

WHAT WILL I DO AS A PARTICIPANT IN THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE?

  • Raise critical awareness and understanding of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and global issues like human rights, environmental justice, and marginalization.

  • Gain insight into the pressing global issues related to People, Prosperity, Peace, Partnerships and the Planet and critically reflect on our own positionality in regards to ‘others’.

  • Participate in a platform to have your voice heard in the broader community and receive support to implement your ideas into impactful solutions.

  • Collaborate with community members and mentors, learn about ways to listen, hear and learn from equity-deserving groups in the community or in other countries.

  • Develop creative and practical proposals for how issues can be resolved.

WHAT

The Sustainable Development Challenge is a youth platform where students create projects that impact the UN’s 17 Global Goals.

WHY

  • To raise awareness of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

  • To give students insight into the pressing global issues related to People, Prosperity, Peace, Partnerships and the Planet and to connect them with local organizations who are already impacting them.

  • To provide students with a platform to have their voice heard in the broader community and to support them to implement their ideas into impactful solutions.

  • To provide opportunity for students to collaborate with community members and mentors to develop creative and practical proposals for how issues can be resolved.

  • To continue the journey towards reaching the SDGs; through the knowledge that financial awards top teams receive, will actually go to implementing the team projects.
